American Farmland Trust has named farmers markets in Virginia, Ohio and New York as its favorite farmers markets in four categories.

The America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest received more than 50,000 votes for the more than 1,200 farmers markets that had entered to end up with the following winners:

  • King George Farmers Market in King George, Va., in the boutique category;
  • Champaign County Farmers Market in Urbana, Ohio, in the small category;
  • Falls Church Farmers Market in Falls Church, Va., in the medium category; and
  • City of Rochester Public Market in Rochester, N.Y., in the larger category.

Winners received use of a logo, 500 tote bags, an outdoor banner, up to $500 in printed promotional items, $1,000 in graphic design for a product of the market’s choice and 200 copies of the American Farmland magazine.

The contest also gives a top 20 list for each category.

American Farmland Trust, Washington, D.C., ran the contest to help support local farmers markets. The trust works to spread the message that 125 acres of farmland is lost to development every hour, according to its website.
