(June 13) Shipments of summer mangoes from Mexico will be delayed this year, but a late end to the deal could push year-end volumes up over last year, importers said.

Due to late blooms, production out of Sinaloa and Nayarit are about two weeks behind schedule, with shipments expected at the end of June, said Bill Vogel, president of Tavilla Sales Co., Los Angeles. Vogel said the industry needed to guard against bringing fruit in before it was ripe.

Adding to the delays this year is a mix-up in the order of production, Vogel said. For the first time in a long time, many hadens and kents from Sinaloa and Nayarit will be harvested before, not after, the region’s tommy atkins.

“If anything, this is a very strange year,” Vogel said.

Meanwhile, some product coming across in early June, from the Michoacan region, was experiencing quality problems, Vogel said. But he said packers have, for the most part, done a good job of sorting the good from the bad and standardizing sizes.

“The quality in Sinaloa and Nayarit looks excellent, but Michoacan has had kind of a rough year,” he said.

With demand high, some less-than-stellar product has made it onto retail shelves, said William Watson, director of the National Mango Board, Winter Park, Fla. But that problem should correct itself when Sinaloa gets into full swing, he said.

“The market’s pretty tight now, so you tend to get some that could have stayed on the tree a little longer, but I don’t expect that to be the case in the next weeks,” Watson said.

Vogel predicted a gap in product would begin lifting by the week of June 18, but that supplies of larger mangoes could remain tight.

With peak volumes expected 10 to 14 days later than usual this year from Sinaloa and Nayarit, markets were expected to remain very active through at least June 16, said Chris Ciruli, partner in Ciruli Bros. LLC, Rio Rico, Ariz.

On June 12, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported prices of $4.75-5.50 for one-layer cartons of tommy atkins size 8s from Mexico, comparable to last year at the same time.
