(March 4, 8:20 a.m.) Berry giant Driscoll Strawberry Associates Inc. has extended its reach overseas.

The Watsonville, Calif.-based grower-shipper has started a new company, Driscoll’s of Europe, according to a company news release.

Based in Breda, The Netherlands, Driscoll’s of Europe will source proprietary strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries grown in Europe and North Africa.

Driscoll Strawberry Associates will hold a controlling interest in the new company, which replaces a former company, Berry Gardens, that had been a partnership between Driscoll and two European companies.

Fruit packed by Driscoll’s of Europe will be sold under the Driscoll’s brand. Theo Houwen, a 19-year veteran of the European produce industry, has been named the company’s managing director.
