(Jan. 11) Maine's potato production for the 2007 crop will be less than in 2006, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture figures reported by the Associated Press.

Maine growers harvested an estimated 1.65 billion pounds of potatoes in 2007, 8% less than last year, the AP reported.

Reduced acreage and lower yields have been blamed for the lower production.

Although the yields, which reached 29,000 pounds per acre, were high compared to the state’s historical average, they fell short of 2006's record yields.
