Organics Unlimited, San Diego, is adding 80 acres to its organic banana acreage in Colima, Mexico.

The new acreage will increase the company’s production by about 25%, spokeswoman Bev Oster said. The first crops will become available in February.

The company’s GROW program provides health and education programs for employees’ communities. A GROW label appears on product alongside company labeling.

“We are also adding a shade house for propagation of new plants, an important step in increasing production without substituting quality,” Organics Unlimited president Mayra Velazquez de Leon said in a news release. “In keeping with our natural environment, this shade house will be built entirely of coconut palm fronds from our existing organic coconut palms.”

The company distributes organic tropical fruits from Mexico and South America.
