Pears were the inspiration for a new clothing collection featured during an international fashion week — and not for their flavor or shape — but for their color.

Indian fashionistas peruse a 35-garment fashion collection sponsored by Pear Bureau Northwest and inspired by the different colors of pears.

The Pear Bureau Northwest, Milwaukie, Ore., through its international representative The SCS Group, sponsored a collection by designers Gunjan Arora and Rahul Jain during the Chennai International Fashion Week 2009 in Chennai, India, Dec. 20.

“When we first met with the representatives of the Pear Bureau Northwest in India, we were amazed by the spectrum of colors and natural beauty of the pear,” Jain said, according to a news release. “When one talks about a pear, one usually imagines a green pear. Who knew that there were so many varieties, textures and colors to a pear?”

The 35-garment collection ranged from green to yellow to cinnamon brown to include the variety of colors of the pears that ship from Washington and Oregon, the region the bureau represents.

India is a growing export destination for the northwest, which shipped 92% more pears to the country this season, compared to 2008-09, according to the release.

Arora and Jain’s clothing, sold under the Sirali label, is available in select boutiques in the U.S., as well as Australia and the Middle East. Their designs have been worn by celebrities, including Nicole Kidman and Caroline Douglas, according to the release.
