(Oct. 4) KEENE, N.H. — Barely a year after C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. made a major move by purchasing distribution operations of bankrupt Fleming Cos. Inc. and worked a trade with its chief rival, the privately held distributor has moved its corporate headquarters to a new city and state, even if it’s only 14 miles away.

C&S, the largest wholesale food distributor in New England and No. 2 in the U.S. behind only Eden Prairie, Minn.-based Supervalu Inc., officially opened its new 45,000-square-foot corporate headquarters in Keene Sept. 29 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local dignitaries and corporate leaders.

However, the move from longtime base Brattleboro, Vt., had been taking place in several waves for several months, said Karen Adelman, a company spokeswoman. The move was completed in early August.

A primary spark to the move was the company’s $400 million purchase of the Midwest distribution business of Fleming and subsequent swap of Fleming’s former customer supply agreements, inventory and trade names with Supervalu, for the latter’s New England distribution business.

“We had really outgrown the space, especially with all the Fleming stuff,” Adelman said.
