(May 10) CHICAGO — Del Monte wants consumers to put fruits and vegetables alongside their brats, burgers, chicken and ribs during their summer grilling.

Del Monte Fresh Produce NA Inc., Coral Gables, Fla., plans to reward shoppers with home grilling systems and related prizes in a promotion with grill manufacturer Char-Broil. The company announced the Fresh Grill Thrill Sweepstakes at the United Fresh Produce Association’s Fresh Marketplace 2007 May 6. The promotion is scheduled to run June 18 to July 20.

Tags will be on pineapples and stickers will be on bananas, and the company plans to provide fresh fruit grilling recipes and a chance to win five prizes, including grills and Char-Broil accessories.

Dennis Christou, Del Monte’s vice president of marketing, said the promotion introduces produce into a venue that typically does not feature fresh fruits.

“Grilled fruits are quite an unusual taste,” he said. “Most American consumers don’t think of grilling fruit.”
