(Sept. 30, 12:30 p.m.) Fast food giants Wendy’s and Arby’s have merged, creating the third-largest quick-service chain in the U.S.

Dublin, Ohio-based Wendy’s International Inc. and Atlanta-based Arby’s Restaurant Group Inc. joined forces Sept. 29, according to a news release from the new company, now known as Atlanta-based Wendy’s/Arby’s Group Inc., a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Triarc Companies Inc.

The merged company includes more than 10,000 restaurants in all 50 states and in 21 countries.

The new company offers many menu items featuring fresh produce. Among recent developments, Wendy’s has begun allowing customers to substitute baked potatoes and side salads for fries in its value meals.

In 2005, Arby’s introduced its Market Fresh chicken salad sandwich, which includes fresh grapes and apples.
