Paul Newman, a 23-year veteran of the Washington fresh apple industry, has joined FirstFruits Marketing of Washington, Yakima, as an organic sales specialist.

“Our success depends on building results-driven programs that help grow the organic category for our customers,” Keith Mathews, chief executive officer of FirstFruits Marketing, said in a news release.

Newman joins Matt Miles in spearheading the company’s organic marketing efforts. FirstFruits Marketing represents Broetje Orchards, Prescott, Wash., and Columbia Valley Fruit, Yakima. This season, their organic apple volume will total more than 1.5 million cartons, about 25% of the state’s organic apples, according to the release.

Newman began his apple sales career in 1987 at Hansen Fruit & Cold Storage Co., Yakima, according to the release. He comes to FirstFruits from Rainier Fruit Sales, Selah, Wash., where he was a specialty sales manager.

FirstFruits Marketing, which opened its doors in late summer, requires the growers it represents to donate to charities a minimum of 10% of a grower-shipper’s share of profits from the marketing company.
