Fresh produce is helping Cracker Barrel celebrate its 40th anniversary.

The 588-unit chain of country cooking restaurants launched a new menu at the beginning of September to commemorate 40 years in business — and fresh fruit and salads are stars of the new offerings.

Cracker Barrel's Autumn Applefest Grilled Chicken Salad includes iceberg and romaine lettuce, dried cranberries and gala apple chunks. The item is a special feature on the menu, in honor of the chain's 40th anniversary.

“We’ve got a variety of new and different choices available with this special anniversary promotion for folks who are celebrating their own special occasions, and for those who are looking for fresh and lighter fare to suit their specific lifestyles,” said Bill Kintzler, Cracker Barrel chef, in a news release.

The new breakfast menu, served all day, features a fruit and yogurt plate with seedless grapes and a gala apple. Warm fried apples are also a side item for breakfast, lunch or dinner, according to the release.

Cracker Barrel is reintroducing its Autumn Applefest menu for lunch and dinner, which includes a grilled chicken salad with iceberg and romaine lettuce, Gala apple chunks, apple cider vinaigrette, grilled chicken, bacon, pecans and dried cranberries. Whole gala apples are also a side dish on the menu, as well as country vegetables.

The list of country vegetables includes classics like mashed potatoes, whole kernel corn, green beans, sweet whole baby carrots, turnip greens and cole slaw, and also a carrot raisin salad as a new choice. The cold salad features shredded whole carrots, raisins, pineapple and pecans in a creamy dressing, according to the release.

The menu items should be available through Oct. 25.
