Well-Pict Inc. plans to offer convention visitors a taste of two new varieties — one strawberry and one raspberry — Oct. 15-18 at the Produce Marketing Association Fresh Summit in Orlando, Fla.

Watsonville, Calif.-based Well-Pict will be at booth No. 1067.

The company’s proprietary strawberry variety 4053, which replaces 2880, will be in production annually from fall to mid-December in Oxnard, said Dan Crowley, Well-Pict sales manager. It’s also grown in Watsonville and Salinas before the season ends there.

“This was a replacement of a four-year cultivar,” Crowley said. “It takes time obviously to get it up and going at the nursery level. Its characteristics are full red color, real good juice content and a great flavor profile. It’s conical with a rounded shoulder so it has a nice appearance in the pack, too.”

Well-Pict will also show off its new proprietary raspberry, variety 2933. The plants were mature enough to allow full conversion to the new variety in Oxnard and Watsonville, he said. It’s being shipped to all markets.

“Fall isn’t typically a berry promotion time,” Crowley said. “But the category itself is growing. It’s a year-round product and we’re filling that need.”
