Wendy’s is giving its salads another outlet on the menu.

The Dublin, Ohio-based chain launched its Pick 2 combo meal nationwide mid-September, allowing customers to order a half-sized version of one of its four Garden Sensations salads plus one of seven other items from its menu for $4.99.

The chain has seen a significant increase in salads sold since it launched the four salads late July — effectively doubling its volume compared to a year ago, according to a news release.

“We’re building on the popularity of our new salads by letting consumers ‘Pick 2’ without compromising on flavor or price,” said Ken Calwell, chief marketing officer, in the release. “Wendy’s is throwing down the gauntlet for the $5 quick service meal.”

The salads are:

  • Apple Pecan Chicken;
  • Baja;
  • Spicy Chicken Caesar; and
  • BLT Cobb.

Consumers can get two salads for $4.99, or get one of the salads plus Wendy’s Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, chili, a baked potato, Chicken Go Wrap or a small beverage or frosty. Eighteen of the 28 possible Pick 2 combinations have fewer than 600 calories and provide fruits, vegetables, nuts, dairy and proteins, a health claim for the new option, according to the release.

Wendy’s tested the Pick 2 meal in the same markets where it tested the entrée salads this spring, including Columbus, Ohio, and Nashville, Tenn.
