(Jan. 22) A donation from a former business member gave the Organic Trade Association (OTA), Greenfield, Mass., the means to get its new Organic Agriculture and Products Education Institute off the ground.

“The venture had been in the works, the OTA had already done the paperwork, but the first funding came from Bruce and Alissa Nierenberg,” said Barbara Haumann, press secretary for the association. “Bruce had several companies that were members of the OTA, so he has been involved in that way.”

Bruce Nierenberg owned B.I.N. Sales and Marketing Inc., Coventry, R.I., a natural, organic and specialty products broker. He has since sold the company, but remains involved in the trade association.

The OTA helped launch the Organic Center, a scientific research institute, in recent years. The mission of the education institute is to further education about the attributes and benefits of organic agriculture and products.
