APTOS, Calif. — Ag Against Hunger was honored Oct. 18 as the 2010 Food Industry Donor of the Year by Congressman Sam Farr, D-Carmel.

The award was given at the fifth annual Nutrition Summit put on by Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz County.

Salinas-based Ag Against Hunger was recognized for its distribution of 8.8 million pounds of fresh surplus vegetables and fruit to families in need so far this year. About 172 million pounds of produce has been donated to the nonprofit by grower-shippers in three counties more than 20 years. It’s distributed through California and other western states.

Ag Against Hunger’s Alicia Cask, board president; Karen DeWitt, executive director; and founders Tim Driscoll, Jess Brown and Willy Elliott-McCrea accepted the award.

There were also congratulatory letters from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, plus proclamations from other elected officials as well as the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau.
