(Sept. 17) BEVERLY, Mass. — Two companies that specialize in maintaining the cold chain are forming an alliance that could create new cold-chain products for a variety of industries, including produce.

Sensitech, Beverly, Mass., and Envirotainer, Lagga Marma, Sweden, will work together to develop products aimed at maintaining the cold chain for air transportation.

“The collaboration with Envirotainer is a natural match that offers customers of both companies new levels of control for the cold chain,” Eric Schultz, chairman and chief executive officer of Sensitech, said in a news release. “For customers, this means reduced cost, smaller inventories and fewer rejected shipments.”

Though the alliance will primarily target the pharmaceuticals industry, Becky DeWitt, marketing and communications manager for Sensitech, said the produce industry could benefit, as well.

DeWitt said no specific opportunities in the produce industry have been planned.

Envirotainer products include a full line of temperature-controlled containers, while Sensitech specializes in temperature-monitoring instruments.

This isn’t the first time Sensitech has partnered with another company to achieve advances in cold-chain technology. In 2002, the company teamed up with The Perishables Group, a Chicago-based company specializing in category development for perishables, to create a product quality blueprint for the category management process.

The companies introduced the customized auditing service to produce growers and shippers, supermarkets, third-party logistics providers, restaurants and foodservice providers.
