(Sept. 12) Fifteen California growers and wholesale nut handlers are suing the U.S. Department of Agriculture over a regulation that took effect a year ago requiring almonds to be pasteurized, according to an Associated Press story in the Los Angeles Times.

Growers say the rule is pushing consumers of organic and raw almonds to buy imported unpasteurized nuts and harming their business.

The regulation was put into effect after raw almonds were implicated in a salmonella outbreak.

Plaintiffs say proper procedures were not followed in formulating the rule.
