(Dec. 20) The Fibre Box Association is thinking outside the box by asking manufacturers and shippers to think about the box.

The association and other industry groups collaborated on “How to Get the Best Box,” a brochure guide with checklists to ensure shippers are informed when choosing the exact type of corrugated boxes that would be best for their products.

“In our industry, this information hasn’t been all together before,” said Stephanie Maegdlin, manager of marketing and communications for Fibre Box Association, Elk Grove, Ill.

Fibre Box cooperated with the Association of Independent Corrugated Converters, Alexandria, Va., the International Safe Transit Association, East Lansing, Mich., and the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, Norcross, Ga., on the project.

The brochure provides detailed information on what a corrugated manufacturer needs to know to design the best package for a product, as well as an explanation of the common performance tests required for different shipping scenarios.

The brochure also features a “Need-To-Know” detachable checklist with information about the product, set up and packing, distribution and storage, marketing considerations and regulatory and other issues.

“We are selling it in bulk right now, but we’re looking at getting it to be an online document that can be viewed,” Maegdlin said.
