Del Monte Fresh Produce NA Inc. is trading one New Jersey port for another.
Beginning in October, the Coral Gables, Fla.-based companyâs New Jersey-bound ships will dock at Gloucester Terminals LLC, according to media reports.
The company had used the South Jersey Port in Camden for the past 20 years. About a half-million tons of Del Monte bananas, carried on 75 ships, arrived at the port annually, according to a story in The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Dennis Christou, Del Monte Freshâs vice president of marketing, would not comment on the move.
According to the Inquirer story, labor costs played a role in the companyâs decision. Workers at the Gloucester port are paid less than those at the Camden port, according to the story.
