(Jan. 8) WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration has launched a Web site to encourage the use of ships bearing the U.S. flag to move cargo around the world.

Visitors to the site can find their country of destination using a pull-down menu. From there, the site automatically lists information about shipping companies that carry shipments to that particular region of the world. Information includes the carrier’s name, contact information, ports of call, frequency of calls and contact and Web site information.

Maritime administrator Capt. William Schubert said in a release that the site could help a variety of groups involved in the shipping industry.

“This site is of great value not only to exporters and importers,” he said. “But also to a variety of government agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Department of Defense.”
