(April 21, 11:51 a.m.) Earthcycle Packaging Ltd. and Innovia Films Ltd. have scored their second award in half a year for a palm fiber compostable tray and film overwrap used to package organic kiwifruit.

Vancouver, British Columbia-based Earthcycle and Wigton, England-based Innovia Films received a DuPont Award for Packaging Innovation for their use of only renewable and certified compostable materials in the production of the package, which features Earthcycle’s tray and Innovia’s Natureflex film.

The award recognizes breakthrough accomplishments in sustainability, according to a news release from Earthcycle.

“Earthcycle is thrilled to have won this prestigious DuPont Award for Packaging Innovation, alongside Innovia Films,” said Shannon Boase, Earthcycle’s president and founder, in the release. “It is a wonderful feeling to know that Earthcycle and Innovia Films’ compostable packaging has been recognized by an international expert jury as contributors to improved sustainability.”

Earthcycle, which first introduced its line of packaging to the produce industry at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit in 2005 in Atlanta, received a PMA Impact Award for its kiwifruit packaging for The Oppenheimer Group at the 2007 Fresh Summit in Houston.

PALM FIBER AND WOOD PULP

Earthcycle packaging is manufactured from renewable West Malaysian palm fiber, and Innovia’s Natureflex is a cellulose-based film produced from renewable wood pulp, the release said.

“It is rewarding to know that Innovia’s commitment to sustainability has been acknowledged through its compostable-packaging film, ultimately playing a part in reducing our environmental footprint,” said Malcolm Cohn, Innovia’s market manager for the Americas, in the release.

The organic kiwifruit package was selected from nearly 80 entries from North America, Europe and Asia, by a panel of independent judges, the release said.

Seven factors were assessed for the DuPont Award, including clean production, community/social benefit, cost-effectiveness, responsible sourcing and resource and energy optimization, the release said.
