(July 31) Purefresh Organic, a division of Fresh Direct Ltd., Auckland, New Zealand, is introducing biodegradable plastic packaging for organic fruits and vegetables.

According to the New Zealand Herald, the new packaging will break down in 18 months rather than in 150 years, said Anna Loma, general manager.

"I hope this will bring us a little bit closer to lowering the environmental impact of our organic product on the supermarket shelves," she said, in the Herald article.

Purefresh reportedly supplies 80% of the organic produce sold in New Zealand supermarkets.
