(Nov. 28) NNZ USA, Lawrenceville, Ga., has introduced AgroResin biodegradable trays to U.S. and Canadian markets.

“This has been out in Europe for quite some time, but it’s just now hitting North America,” said director of sales and marketing Steve Greenfield. “Biodegradable is much bigger over there than it is here.”

That is, in part, because biodegradable trays cost about 25% more than conventional trays, Greenfield said. That doesn’t mean AgroResin won’t find a market in the U.S. and Canada.

“What we’re trying to do is market them to the organic industry,” said Greenfield, whose company reached an exclusive North American marketing agreement with Singapore-based manufacturer Grenidea Technologies Pte. Ltd. in September. “There’s a lot of interest in the marriage of organic produce and biodegradable packaging.”

The lightweight trays come in four sizes, are microwaveable and moisture-resistant, according to NNZ. Greenfield said the trays can be used with a wide variety of produce, and NNZ has seven warehouses across the country.

The trays, which are made from palm fiber, are 100% biodegradable, Greenfield said.
