Frieda’s Inc.’s president and chief executive officer Karen Caplan plans to make an appearance in mid-October in Atlanta for the Pillars of EARTH: Sustainable Leadership Awards.

Caplan was tabbed to host the event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Costa Rica’s EARTH University at the event Oct. 14. The non-profit university offers students in Latin America and the Caribbean educational opportunities in sustainable agriculture.

The EARTH University Foundation is based in Atlanta.

Los Alamitos, Calif.-based Frieda’s is a donor to the foundation’s scholarship program, and has worked with interns and graduates from the university, according to a news release.

This summer, Frieda’s brought Aldo Bettoni, an EARTH University graduate student, to manage its open-air produce market. He is still with the company as strategic business analyst.

Caplan should be presenting awards to:

  • Ciannat Howett, director of sustainability initiatives for Emory University;
  • Daron Joffe, an organic grower and environmental educator;
  • John Burgess, president and chief operating officer of Coca-Cola Recycling; and,
  • Jane and Dameron Black III with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

“EARTH University is producing some truly capable young leaders in sustainable agri-business, and this awards program highlights some positive role models for students,” Caplan said in the release.
