With almost perfect scores, Hollandia Produce LLC became the first North American greenhouse producer of hydroponic leafy greens to earn Primus Global Food Safety Initiative certification, according to a news release from the Carpinteria, Calif., produce company.

The certification was granted March 24, according to the PrimusGFS website. No other suppliers on the PrimusGFS list have hydroponically grown leafy greens.

PrimusGFS auditors gave Hollandia’s operation a 100% score for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points and an overall superior audit score of 99.21%, according to the news release.

Pete Overgaag, Hollandia’s chief executive officer, said in the release that the company’s investments in food safety training and reinforcement, along with policy and procedure protocols, are the foundation of Hollandia’s overall corporate culture of food safety.

The GFSI certification differentiates Hollandia’s hydroponically grown, Live Gourmet branded lettuces, arugula and upland cress from similar products, Vincent Choate, Hollandia marketing director, said in the release.

He said the certification and verification of the company’s food safety program will help Hollandia build trust with its customers and the public.
