(April 26) STAMFORD, Conn. — Big changes are under way at International Paper.

The company is acquiring Box USA Holdings Inc., Northbrook, Ill., a leading manufacturer of corrugated packaging.

Box USA is the nation’s largest independent packaging producer, employing 2,300 people at 23 industrial packaging converting plants serving the food, beverage and general industrial markets.

International Paper, meanwhile, has 10 paper mills and 70 converting facilities. The company has operations in nearly 50 countries and employs more than 117,000 people.

John Faraci, chairman and chief executive officer of International Paper, said in a news release that the acquisition will put his company in a good position in the packaging industry.

“By combining Box USA with International Paper’s existing network of 48 domestic industrial packaging facilities, and our consumer packaging and distribution businesses, we will be well positioned as the supplier of choice in the packaging industry,” he said.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed. International Paper did not return calls for this story.

In other news, the company has made a couple of management changes in its Defor division. Bryan Conklin has been named segment marketing manager of agriculture.

In that position, Conklin will be responsible for the company’s Defor packaging system as it pertains to the entire produce market.

Conklin succeeds Brian Smith, who has moved up to West Coast region sales manager.
