King Fresh Marketing LLC, a central California table grape grower-shipper-marketer, has more than doubled its cold storage capacity with the purchase of Jody Cold Storage Inc., Dinuba, Calif.

The acquisition also triggered a number of changes for the parent company, said Keith Wilson, owner, who declined to reveal the purchase price.

King Fresh Marketing relocated its offices to the Dinuba site, which has been renamed Jody Fresh Cooling Co. and is close to the marketing company’s other Dinuba storage facility, River Island Cold Storage.

Jody Fresh Cooling contains 50,000 square feet of cold storage and a separate packing line operation, Wilson said. River Island has about 30,000 square feet of cold storage, he said.

“We need the capacity to store table grapes for King Fresh,” Wilson said. “We’ll do about 1.5 million cartons this year.”

Most of the company’s table grapes are field packed, but King Fresh has installed an in-house refrigerated line for specialty packing such as tricolor clamshells, Wilson said.

“It also will allow us to do a better job with food safety certification and traceability issues,” he said.

The cold storage facilities of River Island and Jody Cooling and the packing line at Jody Cooling will be run as separate entities apart from King Fresh Marketing, Wilson said.

To that end, Kingsburg-based grower-shipper Olson Family Farms is leasing the packing operation for its stone fruit, he said.

“Olson Family Farms has already installed a Versa Print fruit stickering machine that will give them the flexibility to print on demand and offers 100% traceability for each piece of fruit,” Wilson said.

Two Kern County pomegranate grower-shippers, Yurosek Farms and Etchegaray Farms, are committed to use the packing line in the fall, an agreement that includes marketing support from King Fresh.

“And we’re looking for growers to pack citrus during the winter,” Wilson said.

The Jody Cold Storage purchase also included stone fruit acreage. Wilson said the company’s current plans are to retain the peach orchard.

“The trees are young and in very good shape,” he said.

King Fresh Marketing’s move to Dinuba required a telephone number change. The new number is(559) 596-2040. The new telephone number for Jody Cooling Fresh Cooling Co. is (559) 591-5639.

In the original version, the names of Yurosek Farms and Etchegaray Farms were misspelled.
