(Jan. 11) Landec Corp., Menlo Park, Calif., has elected board member Nicholas Tompkins as chairman of the board for Apio Inc., Landec’s wholly owned food technology subsidiary based in Guadalupe, Calif.

Tompkins founded Apio in 1979, and in 2004 the company entered into an exclusive agreement with Chiquita Brands International, Inc., Cincinnati, to supply Chiquita with BreatheWay proprietary banana packaging technology on a worldwide basis.

Tompkins will continue to focus on Apio’s strategic growth opportunities, including new business and partner development, according to a company press release.

Ron Midyett, 42, has been promoted to chief executive officer, filling the role Tompkins previously held. Prior to joining Apio in 2005, Midyett was senior vice president of operations for Dole Fresh Vegetables, Monterey.

“Ron possesses 20 years of technology and operations experience in the produce industry with nearly three years as Apio’s chief operating officer,” Tompkins said in the release.

Tomkins said Midyett will focus on integrating technology, operations, marketing and sales to advance Apio’s future growth.

Gary Steele, chairman and chief executive officer of Landec, said in the release, “We have a strong senior leader team in Ron Midyett and Nick Tompkins that will continue to profitably grow Landec’s food business based on innovation, quality and key partner relationships.”
