(June 19) MIAMI — A Miami importer is refurbishing and expanding its facility with an eye toward becoming a full-line distributor.

Merex Miami Corp., a subsidiary of Yonkers, N.Y.-based Merex Corp., is quadrupling its cooling capacity and installing pre-cooling, vacuum cooling and refrigerated docks. The project should be completed by early July, said Steve Stutz, the company’s general manager.

The expansion will accommodate 800 pallet positions, he said, noting that’s about 10 times the volume Merex Miami could handle previously.

The company, which distributes to buyers throughout the U.S. and handles many specialty items out of Central and South America, as well as imports from other regions such as Holland, will likely move into new products because of its improved infrastructure, Stutz said.

“We will eventually carry more of a broadline base with items like lettuces and melons,” he said.
