Ocean Mist Farms plans to complete expansion of its Baja Mist production facility in Mexico in January, according to the Castroville, Calif.-based company.

To accommodate rising demand for commodities like brussels sprouts and green onions, the Mexicali Valley site is doubling its size, Ocean Mist vice president of production Troy Boutonnet said in a news release.

The 18,000 square-foot facility will be used to ship iceless green onions, brussels sprouts, leeks and radishes, among other commodities.

Through Dec. 6, 90% of all ancillary buildings, docks and new additions were completed, Boutonnet said. Completion was originally estimated for December.

Nationally, brussels sprouts sales were up 12.5% over the previous year through the end of August, according to Perishables Group FreshFacts. That brought average sales to $62 weekly per store.

The site is spread over nearly two acres.
