(May 21) LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Pactiv Corp. agreed on May 20 to purchase Winkler Forming Inc.

Winkler is a manufacturer of amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (APET), a material used in creating display packaging for fresh-cut produce.

Richard Wambold, chairman and chief executive officer of Pactiv, said the move is in keeping with the company’s ongoing strategy of filling in gaps in its production areas.

“This underscores the strategy we’ve been discussing over the past few months,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to enter a market we are not in today. This will be a key material for us.”

The acquisition of Winkler will enhance Pactiv’s existing display packaging line, which includes oriented polystyrene, talc-filled polypropylene, aluminum, molded fiber, ovenable paperboard and foam products.

Pactiv does not currently manufacture its own line of APET products, and Wambold said that buying Winkler was a more effective strategy than Pactiv building its own factory and starting from scratch.

Winkler has two manufacturing facilities, one in Santa Fe Springs, Calif., and one in Bridgeview, Ill. The Santa Fe Springs location also features a tool making operation.

Wambold said Pactiv is looking at further acquisitions in the future, though they will likely involve companies and products outside the area of APET. He declined to name specifics at this time.

“There are other gaps in our line,” he said. “There are other products and materials that we are looking at.”
