(Sept. 8) Gary Fleming was named the director of industry technology for the Produce Marketing Association, Newark, Del.

He will be responsible for planning, administering and evaluating PMA technology-related projects and activities, as well as identifying potential projects and assessing member and industry needs.

“Developing coding standards is a key component of the value we provide our members, so we needed to find someone who is top-notch and ready to run with the programs that are already under way,” said Bryan Silbermann, PMA president.

Fleming also will serve as secretary-general for the International Federation for Produce Coding. This coalition of fruit and vegetable associations from around the world was formed last year to introduce a global solution for Price Look-Up numbers and other coding standards.

He will take charge of the Industry Product Database product and coordinate PMA’s activities with the Canadian Produce Marketing Association, Ottawa, in jointly staffing the Traceability Task Force.

“Having worked with PMA in various functions over the last six years, I have stayed close to their staff, their membership and their current opportunities and now look forward to participating as a PMA employee,” Fleming said.

Fleming has worked in the produce industry for seven years, most recently at Foodconnex, Auburn, Calif., where he was the vice president of business relations.
