(Feb. 25, 2:08 p.m.) Sealed Air Corporation’s Cryovac NatureTRAY package has been certified to meet specific standards for compostable and biodegradable plastics.

According to a new release from Duncan, S.C.-based Sealed Air, the Cryovac NatureTRAY package, which can be used for fresh produce, is the first packaging in the U.S. certified by the New York-based Biodegradable Products Institute to be made entirely from plant products.

“Certification of NatureTRAY by the Biodegradable Products Institute as compostable according to ASTM D6400 is important to consumers because that is the pre-eminent certification body for compostable products in the U.S.,” said Richard Douglas, director of sales and marketing for Sealed Air’s rigid packaging trays and absorbent products, in an e-mail. “The BPI certification provides unbiased third-party scientific verification that the NatureTRAY will decompose in a commercial compost facility at the same rate as food and other known compostables.”
