Anthony Barbieri, produce and floral director for Acme Markets Inc., is the new vice president of sales and business development for the Produce Marketing Association.

Barbieri, director of produce and floral for Acme Markets Inc., Malvern, Pa., will join the Newark, Del.-based association in June, said Julia Stewart, director of public relations.

Barbieri’s produce career spans 34 years with Acme markets, where he started as a store produce manager. He managed produce and floral operations of the chains’ 125 stores.

He was named the Retailer of the Year by The Packer’s sister publication Produce Merchandising, in 2007. He was profiled in The Packer 25 in 2009.

“Anthony is passionate about the success of the entire produce and floral supply chain, so I know he will now bring his considerable business acumen to the task of growing PMA members’ businesses with his signature high energy level,” said PMA president Bryan Silbermann, in a news release.

As vice president of sales and business development, Barbieri will be responsible for “developing and maintaining relationships with existing and prospective members, as well as event exhibitors, sponsors and attendees,” according to a news release.

The role also involves building and maintaining partnerships with industry groups, including promotional and trade organizations.

“Anthony understands that for our industry to work effectively and efficiently, all of the links of the supply chain must work together,” said Bill Schuler, chairman of PMA’s board of directors and president and chief executive officer of the Castellini Group of Cos., in a news release.

“His experience and focus in this new position will, without question, benefit PMA’s membership and the entire produce and floral industries,” Schuler said.

“I’m very excited to join the PMA team,” Barbieri said, in a news release. “This is an opportunity for me to grow and develop in the association arena and in industry-wide service.”

Barbieri has a long history of volunteer leadership with PMA. A past chair of PMA’s retail board, he will resign his membership on PMA’s board of directors to assume his staff position.
