Chiquita is looking for a new sticker for its bananas, and soliciting the creative help of consumers to develop it.

Cincinnati-based Chiquita Brands International launched the Chiquita Banana Sticker Design Contest June 21, giving consumers until July 18 to submit designs based on the classic blue Chiquita sticker, according to a news release.

Chiquita launches sticker contest

“We created the Chiquita Banana Sticker Design Contest to encourage consumers to interact with the Chiquita brand and make the brand their own,” said Judy Chen, corporate marketing group leader, in the release.

The contest is a first-ever for the company, which launched the website www.eatachiquita.com in 2008 for this type of interactive promotion.

At that time, Chen said the company was looking for ways to market to a younger audience and get them to connect with the iconic Chiquita brand.

“Older people grew up with Chiquita, which basically introduced bananas to the world, especially to the U.S.,” Chen said in December 2008. “They have a warm and fuzzy feeling associated with the brand. Because there are a lot of old associations with the brand, we needed to dust them off.”

Once Chiquita cuts off entries for the contest in July, it is taking the next few weeks to choose the top 50 finalists. Phase two of the contest allows consumers to vote for their favorite designs, ending up with 18 grand prize winners.

Those 18 winning designs should make their way onto Chiquita bananas across the U.S. The runners-up are promised a T-shirt and merchandise from Chiquita’s Shop A Peel Zazzle store.
