At its Midwinter Executive Conference in Phoenix, the Food Marketing Institute honored two grocery industry veterans.

Dean Janeway, president and chief executive officer of Wakefern Food Corp., Keasbey, N.J., received the Herbert Hoover Award for professional excellence and Fred Ball, chairman of Balls Food Stores, Kansas City, Kan., received the Sidney R. Rabb Award for service to the community and advocacy on behalf of the supermarket industry.

Ball served on the FMI board of directors from 1995-2005 and was chairman of Associated Wholesale Grocers for 28 years.

According to a news release, “Ball is considered an innovator and never shied away from trying something new.”

Janeway has spent more than four decades in the food distribution business, joining Wakefern as a junior accountant in 1966.

According to a news release, Janeway’s key to the business is “People, no matter what the trends in the industry.”
