(Oct. 20) Did you know mushrooms are a good source of selenium, an essential mineral that may reduce the risk of prostate cancer?

Most consumers don’t, so make it your priority to educate them.

The Mushroom Council, Dublin, Calif., has created a nutrition labeling tool kit for retailers. It contains art and health claims to use in your merchandising practices.

White mushrooms, criminis and portabellas qualify as a good source of selenium, according to the Food and Drug Administration’s nutrient content regulations. Based on a serving size of 2.975 ounces, these mushrooms provide at least 10% of the daily value for selenium.

EMBRACING ETHNICITY

Nash Finch Co., a national food retail and distribution company based in Edina, Minn., is filling the need for a Hispanic supermarket in Chicago, which is home to more than 750,000 Hispanics. The company opened its first Avanza Supermarket in the city in September.

The five Avanza stores, which are in Colorado and Chicago, carry authentic Hispanic items and offer services geared toward the demands of Hispanic shoppers.

GO NUTS DURING THE HOLIDAYS

While nuts should always be a part of your produce department’s setup, the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays make nut displays an even more important priority.
Genaurdi’s Family Market in St. Davids, Pa., merchandises bulk walnuts in a wicker basket next to other popular holiday items like potatoes and onions. A ladle makes it easy for customers to purchase any amount.

SEASONAL SENSATION

With this year’s fresh apple harvest under way, make sure you let consumers know they are getting fruit fresh off the tree. Promote the new harvest by participating in the U.S. Apple Association’s National Apple Month retail fall display contest.

The contest, which began in September, lasts through Nov. 30. Retailers who enter the contest must have an apple display up for at least one week. The display must focus on U.S. apples and apple products; T. Marzetti’s Caramel Apple Dips, Pack-A-Snack and Apple Crisp products; and U.S. peanuts, peanut butter and peanut prod-ucts.

Entries must be postmarked by Dec. 15 and sent to National Apple Month, 22 Triplett Court, Dillsburg, PA 17019. First-, second- and third-place winners will be chosen in each of the three national regions — West, central and East — for stores with 10 or more registers and for stores with nine or fewer registers.
