(UPDATED COVERAGE,  May 5) Gills Onions LLC, Oxnard, Calif., is launching Sweet Spring Arrivals, the company’s first formal product promotion through social media.

Using Facebook and Twitter, Sweet Spring Arrivals is designed to generate online conversations about Gills Onions and to alert shoppers when the products are available. Traditionally, the sliced sweet yellow onions are harvested and shipped from late April through September, but spring rains affected this year’s deal.

“It delayed things, but we have a good crop,” said Nelia Alamo, director of sales & marketing. “Our six-ounce packages of sliced yellow onions are available beginning this week,” she said May 5.

A major advantage of social media is the two-way conversations, Alamo said.

“This is taking it to the next level,” she said. “There’s definitely value in hearing their feedback, hearing what they have to say.”

Sweet Spring Arrivals will help Gill Onions to create a following, Alamo said, and be a source for information regarding onions.

“It’s really exciting to be able to connect with consumers and help to educate them on our products and the different ways they can use them,” she said.

In addition to the company’s social media sites, Sweet Spring Arrivals is highlighted on the company’s website, www.gillsonions.com.
