Olympic speed skating gold medal winner and Federal Way, Wash. native Apolo Ohno is partnering with the Washington Potato Commission, Moses Lake, to help spread the word about the nutritional values of the state’s spuds.

Gold medal skater Apolo Ohno to promote Washington potatoes

Ohno’s efforts will target the public in general and young consumers in particular, the commission said in a news release.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to work with one of the greatest athletes in sport,” Chris Voigt, the commission’s executive director, said in the release. “Given Apolo’s natural affinity for Washington potatoes and his love for eating and cooking healthy foods, we’re thrilled to have him as ambassador for our champion potatoes and healthy messages.”

Ohno, who has earned a spot on the 2010 U.S. Winter Olympic team, and chef Franz Junga of Seattle’s Il Forniao Restaurant recently completed a lengthy photo and video shoot for the commission. The photos and videos will be used by the commission in its publications, posters, feature articles and on its Web site, the release said.

“Apolo shares in the vision and values of the Washington Potato Commission,” Angela Pixton, a registered nurse and chair of the commission’s public and industry education committee, said in the release. â€œHis passion and interest in encouraging kids to lead healthy lifestyles with proper nutrition and exercise is what makes him a terrific ambassador for the commission.”
