Parsippany, N.J.-based Kings Super Markets Inc. is picking up the Guiding Stars nutrition navigation system.

The regional chain has 24 stores in New Jersey and New York, each of which are signed on to use Guiding Stars, a zero-to-three star rating system from Scarborough, Maine-based Hannaford Bros. Co.

Every food item throughout the store is rated through the system using a proprietary algorithm.

“We are committed to exceeding customer expectations and Guiding Stars adds significant value by making it easier for shoppers to identify nutritious choices while they shop,” said Patricia Mikell, senior director of marketing at Kings Super Markets, in the release.

Nutritional attributes that raise a food item’s score include vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and whole grains.

Scores are debited for trans fat, saturated fats, cholesterol, added sugar and added sodium.

The system uses data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to rate fresh produce and also uses the Food and Drug Administration and the World Health Organization’s information, according to the release.

All fresh produce receives at least a two-star rating.
