Social media outreach and pear giveaways highlight the Pear Bureau Northwest’s December National Pear Month activities.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has once again dubbed December National Pear Month, and the Milwaukie, Ore.-based bureau is celebrating with daily posts on Facebook and Twitter, said Cristie Mather, director of communications.

The direct outreach to consumers is new this year, Mather said. In the past, the bureau focused its efforts on media outreach.

The posts will feature recipes, serving tips, décor ideas and other information tailored to Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s Eve and other December events.

In addition, the bureau will hold weekly trivia contests on Facebook during December. Winners will receive a box of a dozen fresh pears. Mather said the promotion should help increase the bureau’s number of Facebook fans, which currently stands at 2,400.
