After a successful inaugural year, Youngstown Grape Distributors Inc., Reedley, Calif., is gearing up for its second season shipping pomegranate arils.
âDemand is very good, and weâll have a constant supply,â said Mike Forrest, the companyâs sales director. âThereâs a nice crop size.â
Production began in late September, with volume shipments expected to ramp up in October with distribution nationwide and in Canada, Forrest said.
This season Younsgstown will pack its arils, the juicy, ruby-red seeds inside pomegranates, in 5.3-ounce and 8-ounce sealed bowls, Forrest said. The company also sells a club-pack sleeve featuring two of the 8-ounce bowls.
Based on the feedback Youngstown has received, consumers find many uses for arils, Forrest said.
âA lot of people eat them out of hand, theyâre great on cereal and in salads, and theyâre used in many different recipes,â he said.
Customers also love that theyâre packed with fiber and antioxidants, Forrest said. Studies have shown that the tannins in arils help reduce the risk of heart disease and lower bad cholesterol levels.
