Ukrop's Super Markets Inc., Richmond, Va., may be seeking a suitor.

Media reports sparked by an article on Food World magazine’s Web site, www.best-met.com, said Ukrop's has issued a prospectus on store data to potential buyers that include Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Charlotte, N.C., Supervalu Inc., Eden Prairie, Minn., and Royal Ahold NV, Zaandam, Netherlands.

Food World said industry sources believe Harris Teeter to be the leading contender.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch on July 14 reported the news follows numerous Richmond-area blog and online forum discussions of a possible sale.

Ukrop’s, Ahold and Supervalu officials declined comment, according to the Times-Dispatch.

A Harris Teeter spokeswoman was quoted as saying the company doesn’t comment on rumors.

The privately held Ukrop's, founded in 1937, has 28 stores in central and southern Virginia.
