Jerry Goldsmith, for 25 years an employee of Safeway Inc., left Pleasanton, Calif., to take the position of director of produce and floral for Spartan Stores, Grand Rapids, Mich.

Spartan Stores brings in new director of produce from Safeway

Goldsmith’s most recent position with Safeway was as regional director for Safeway corporate produce, responsible for the Northern California division, he said. He left the company in August.

During his time at Safeway, Goldsmith also worked as a regional director in the Texas, Chicago and Southern California divisions.

Goldsmith said his goals with Spartan Stores are focused on the local movement and growing the stores’ Michigan Best program for Michigan-grown produce.

“I’m also working with my team to come up with comprehensive programs to help drive top line sales,” Goldsmith said. “We’re also making sure we have the right plan to go to market, still keeping in mind the economy.”

Goldsmith succeeds Sean Walsh, who is now with Richmond, British Columbia-based GFS Canada Co. Inc., a foodservice supplier and distributor, as national category manager for produce.
