Macey's, a Salt Lake City-based Associated Food Stores Inc. corporate store in Providence, Utah, held the original record for world's largest banana display with this one in 2002. The store plans to take the title back from a Remke Market in Kentucky with an even larger display Aug. 26.

The ongoing contest, sponsored by Dole Fresh Fruit Co., Westlake Village, Calif., has not had a new winner since December 2004, when a Remke Markets Inc. store in Florence, Ky., claimed the title from Macey’s.

Macey’s, a Salt Lake City-based Associated Food Stores Inc. corporate store, was the first winner in 2002, and had the title Remke’s then amassed. Remke's used more than 65,000 pounds for its display, said Bil Goldfield, communications manager for Dole.

“Associated’s localization manager and the Macey’s store produce manager came up with the idea of challenging to reclaim the record,” Goldfield said. “They then reached out to Dole, and we were, of course, eager to assist them in the endeavor.”

Macey’s display, which requires more than 165,000 Dole bananas, should be up by Aug. 26. Dole’s Bobby Banana character is expected to attend the unveiling event.

“The reaction to this announcement so far has been enthusiastic from the local media,” Goldfield said. “During the last world’s largest banana display in Utah, a great deal of local news media attended. We are expecting a strong response again.”

The store will also receive a plaque from Dole announcing it as the record holder of the world’s largest banana display.
