The Vidalia Onion Committee has announced the winners of its retail display contest featuring the cartoon character Shrek.

More than 150 retailers in more than a dozen states participated in the “Ogres and Onions” contest, said Wendy Brannen, executive director of the Vidalia, Ga.-based committee.

“This contest had the highest level of participation the Vidalia Onion Committee has had to date,” Brannen said. “With every contest we sponsor, I see more and more good in the outcome.”

Grand prize winner Cathy Harden, produce manager of a Harvey’s store in Macon, Ga., receives a three-day, two-night vacation for four to Orlando, Fla.

First place ($1,000) went to Melissa Price, produce manager of a Harvey’s in Moultrie, Ga. Second place ($500) went to Paul Pogrebneak, produce merchandiser for Pennington Quality Market in Pennington, N.J. Five third-place winners received $100.

Winners were judged on the size and location of their displays, creative display techniques and the quality of the display.
