(Sept. 9, 9:00 a.m.) The James R. Lugg Global Research & Innovation Center, named in honor of Fresh Express Inc.’s food safety chief, will be dedicated during a ceremony Sept. 10.

The facility will be the first-ever global “research and innovation center” for Fresh Express, according to a news release.

In addition to Lugg, scheduled to be at the dedication ceremony at the new facility’s Brunken Ave. location are: Chiquita Brands International Inc. chairman and chief executive officer Fernando Aguirre, Fresh Express president Tanios Viviani, and Salinas mayor and Royal Rose LLC president Dennis Donohue.

On Sept. 11, researchers will present the findings of nine Fresh Express-funded projects on foodborne pathogens and leafy greens. Following the 2006 E. coli outbreak linked to spinach, the salad company earmarked $2 million for research. The research conference is in Monterey, Calif.

Viviani announced plans to name the center after Lugg in June, when Lugg was presented with the Grower-Shipper Association of Central California’s E.E. “Gene” Harden Award for Lifetime Achievement in Central Coast Agriculture, in recognition of his 45 years in agriculture research, science and technology.
