(Oct. 14) Baby lettuces are the focus of the latest line of salads from Fresh Express.

In late September, the Salinas, Calif.-based company began shipping blends that contain 10 varieties of baby leaf lettuces. They have suggested retail prices ranging from $2.99-3.49.

The new line, Baby! Flavorful Blends, includes a 5-ounce package of sweet baby greens that contains salanova — a European butter lettuce that Fresh Express says is new to the U.S. The blend also features baby romaine, leaf, oak and tango.

Another item in the salad line is a 6-ounce bag of baby spicy spinach, featuring baby spinach, arugula, red-vein spinach, tatsoi and mizuna.

A baby 50/50 mix blend in a 5.5-ounce bag contains baby spinach and spring mix.

And a 7-ounce bag of baby veggie spring mix includes carrots, pea pods and broccoli florets among spring mix.

Two of the fresh-cut salad industry’s most popular blends — baby spring mix and baby spinach — come in a larger size with a resealable feature for larger families, said Jennifer Whittle, vice president of innovations.

Baby spinach is available in 6- or 12-ounce packages, and baby spring mix comes in 5- or 10-ounce sizes.

The company plans to promote its new line at Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit 2005 in Atlanta Nov. 4-8, with the aim of showing retailers the segment can drive double-digit growth.
