(Oct. 30) BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — Just weeks after introducing its real-time refrigerated trailer location monitoring and temperature reporting system at the Produce Marketing Association convention in New Orleans, FreshTrak has signed its first customers.

Among them were AllStar Transportation Inc., St. Louis; Alvarez Truck Brokers, Ocala, Fla.; BCJ Trucking Inc., Mount Airy, N.C.; Big Sky Enterprises, Delta, Colo.; and Rowland Transportation Inc., Dade City, Fla.

The system is designed to allow growers, shippers and buyers to know the exact location and condition of their perishable shipments. The system uses a global positioning satellite receiver for location determination and a programmable temperature probe.

The system uses the FreshTrak FT 200, a small device that is installed on the exterior of the refrigerated trailer. The device contains the global positioning satellite receiver, a microcomputer and a data communications transmitter/receiver.

A temperature probe on the inside of the trailer feeds data to the FT 200, which automatically sends an alert via e-mail, digital pager or text-enabled cell phone if the temperature goes outside of specified parameters.

Other features include coast-to-coast, two-way wireless communication throughout North America and an Internet site that serves as the fleet tracking information center.

An entire trip log, including a temperature graph and location data, can be downloaded from the site at any time during the shipment.

“Using FreshTrak gives food retailers better inventory control because they know that their shipments arrive fresh,” company founder and chairman Wayne DuBois said in a news release. “Should the temperature be compromised during shipping, a backup shipment can be quickly dispatched and the current load re-routed to a nearer destination.”

DuBois spent more than 45 years as a grower and fleet operator before starting FreshTrak in 2001 along with a team of farming and agribusiness veterans.
