(Jan. 15) VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The hothouse chess game continues, with the Vancouver-based Oppenheimer Group making the latest move on its cross-town rival BC Hot House Foods Inc.

With BC Hot House having announced numerous marketing alliances in the last year, Oppenheimer announced Jan. 12 that it had reached an agreement to be the North American marketing agent for Delta, British Columbia-based Global Greenhouse Produce Inc.

Oppenheimer will market beefsteak and cluster tomatoes and colored peppers from late winter through late autumn for Global, a four-company marketing cooperative launched in 2002.

The volume strengthens Oppenheimer’s year-round supply of greenhouse products and establishes the marketer as a substantial force in the category, said David Smith, the company’s greenhouse category director.

“It made perfect sense for us to round out the category by having a mix between northern and southern production,” Smith said, referring to other Oppenheimer-affiliated tomato producers, Houweling Nurseries, in Oxnard, Calif., and Sunco Ltd. of Las Vegas and pepper grower Divemex in Etzatlan and Culiacan, Mexico.

“Houweling Nurseries also has facilities in Delta, which, like Global, are at the height of production in the spring and summer,” Smith said. “Now, we will be able to involve more customers in our comprehensive, year-round tomato programs.”

Complementing Global’s spring and summer pepper production, Oppenheimer will market colored peppers from Divemex through the winter months, Smith said.
